10 Rules Of Success Andrew Carnegie Used To Become One Of The World's Richest Men
Andrew Carnegie arrived in the U.S. in 1848 with barely a dollar to his name. By 1901, he was the richest man in the world.
At the height of his power, he was approached by a young journalist named Napoleon Hill who was interested in telling the stories of successful people.
Carnegie saw a special drive in Hill and in 1908 decided that Hill would document all of the strategies that made him a legendary businessman and philanthropist.
Together, they helped pioneer the self-help genre, and Hill's 1937 book "Think and Grow Rich" has gone on to become one of the top-selling books of all time.
When Hill began his career writing about success, Carnegie gave him his "10 Rules of Success" that provided a foundation for much of Hill's work.
1. Define your purpose.
Create a plan of action and start working toward it immediately.
4. Practice "applied faith."
Believe in yourself and your purpose so fully that you act with complete confidence.
5. Have personal initiative.
Do what you have to without being told.
6. Indulge your imagination.
Dare to think beyond what's already been done.

In Hill's words, accurate thinking is "the ability to separate facts from fiction and to use those pertinent to your own concerns or problems."

The Battle Between Value And Growth

Both falling and rising share prices can be attractive.
I'm constantly torn between the attractions of both falling and rising share prices.
On the one hand, the argument that shares are best bought when they are selling cheap fills my head, and on the other, the case that growing companies make good investments is compelling.
So the battle rages on; which will win, is it value or growth? Let's start by inspecting the troops.
Left field -- value
The enticing, often sudden, falls of share prices reacting to news or sentiment can be very tempting with its sometimes elusive suggestion that a bargain may be available for the taking.
Benjamin Graham notably formularised value investing and presented his ideas in the classic 'how to' book The Intelligent Investor, which was first published in 1949.
In this book, Graham incites us to look for a margin of safety when buying shares, arguing that this is necessary because we cannot predict future business performance with any certainty. This safety margin is usually achieved by buying shares in businesses when they are selling cheaply with, for example, low price to earnings and low price to asset ratios.
However, deep-value investing became so popular that it stopped working nearly as well. In the end, investors found that good companies rarely sold at bargain prices and often, but not always, the only companies selling at dirt-cheap prices tended to be those that deserved it!
If a company is bought too cheaply, the investor could end up not with value, but with a company with such bad prospects that the best that can be hoped for is a turnaround in the company's fortunes.
Right field -- growth
Just as seductive, is the constantly rising share price of a growing company, one that keeps increasing its revenue and profits year after year. How tempting to just hop on board and ride that momentum upwards too.
Indeed, successful investors like Richard Farleigh, Jim Slater and Peter Lynch have done just that with mouth-watering results over many years.
In his book, One Up On Wall Street, Lynch regales us with stories of his past investments that have multiplied his initial capital many times over; in fact, he popularised the term ten-bagger.
Meanwhile, Richard Farleigh tells us in his book, Taming The Lion, to wait for a price trend in the right direction and temptingly adds that markets tend to move further than we think possible.
However, growth investing has become so popular that those companies with high rates of growth rarely sell cheaply. The risk that investors then run when they hop onto an upward trend is that the slightest piece of bad, or even just mediocre rather than good news, can send the share price plummeting from its lofty heights. High price to earnings or price to asset values can be dangerous.
The Truce
A great solution to this eternal battle between value and growth is to combine the two approaches. Applying a value mindset to the purchase of growing businesses with good prospects, could be a winning strategy.
Buying a growth company that has had its share price temporarily knocked by a setback of some kind, is a useful method of applying value to growth, and hopefully avoiding the pitfall of buying companies that are cheap for a reason, or paying too much for growth.
By not overpaying for growth, Graham's advice on safety margins is being observed.
To me, value means buying quality and growth at a reasonable price. If we do that, there is no battle at all!

Financial Ratio Analysis with Examples
Financial ratios are used to measure a company's financial strengths and weaknesses, as well as the profitability of a business. Investors can use financial ratios to evaluate the performance of a company by comparing them to others in the same industry.
For instance, the dividend payout ratio can be used to figure out what percentage of the company’s earnings is being paid out to shareholders in the form of dividends. Generally, the higher the payout ratio the more attractively are shares of the firm seen by stock traders. This also indicates that the company pays more in dividends and thus less earnings are invested back into the business to create future growth.
Following are the main advantages of Financial Ratio Analysis:
1. Ratios are easy to understand by all users.

4. It may lead to distortion caused by inflation. Price level changes can make the comparison of figures difficult over a period of time.
5. Ratio analysis is mainly a technique of quantitative analysis and it ignores some important qualitative factors which can be critical in decision making.
6. Effect of window dressing by prepares of financial statements.
7. Ratio analysis is costly and small businesses may not be able to afford it.
8. There are no standard ratios. One specific ratio can have different formulas which may lead to different outcomes and difficult for comparison purposes.
9. Ratios are relative figures and do not indicate the size of a firm.
10. Lack of benchmark.
11. Accounting standards and practices in different countries vary widely, and this may hamper meaningful global-performance comparisons.

Dividend per share = 70,000 / 350,000 = $0.20
The dividend payout ratio = 0.20 / 0.40 = 50%
4) Sports Ltd has ordinary share capital of 200,000 shares at $1 each. It made a net profit of $400,000 that is available to the ordinary shareholders. The market price of a share is $6.00.
Then:
EPS = $400,000 / 200,000 = $2 per share

Then, the Total Liabilities = 2,000 + 38,000 = $40,000

Gross profit ratio = (11,000 / 15,000 ) * 100% = 73.33 %

Acid test ratio = (20,000 - 6,000) / 5,000 = 2.8 (This means that current assets in liquid form are 2.8 times current liabilities)
Equity Shareholders' Funds = Total Capital and Reserves + Long term Liabilities = 25000 + 15000 = $40,000
Gearing ratio = 15,000 / 40,000 = 0.375
